Yorkshire Dales bridge repairs progressing at pace

The repairs to Cogden North bridge in the Yorkshire Dales are entering the next stage following unprecedented flooding in summer 2019.

Temporary traffic lights will be in operation on the B6270 Richmond to Grinton road from 7am on Saturday, November 7, until 7pm on Friday, November 20. An overnight closure will be in place from 7pm on November 20 until 7am on November 21.

When Cogden North and Cogden South bridges were destroyed in the floods, North Yorkshire County Council’s highways team quickly built temporary structures.

At Cogden North, the foundation works and new culvert has been installed. The remaining works are to remove the temporary bridge, reinstate the surrounding land and finish rebuilding the stone walls. It is due to be complete by the end of November.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, said: “When the bridges collapsed our highways teams acted fast to build temporary structures. So far the work has gone smoothly and the majority of repairs at Cogden North is complete.  Unfortunately the overnight closure will result in a lengthy diversion so if you’re travelling during this time please remember to check the details and give yourself more time.”

County Councillor Yvonne Peacock, member for the Upper Dales, said: “In the aftermath of the flooding the council and community pulled together to repair the damage and the bridges are a key element of this recovery. These bridges are part of the essential infrastructure in the Dales so it’s great to hear that the work is progressing well and it will soon be complete.”

Work to rebuild the Cogden South bridge is anticipated to be completed by January 25, 2021.

Advance warning signs will be in place and there will be a signed diversion during the road closure period.

Drivers are being asked to comply with the traffic signals, especially when on red in this remote location, to maintain as safe an environment as possible for those working on or travelling through the site.

Operatives working on site are observing all Government guidelines on safe social distancing.
