Rigmaden Bridge in Kirby Lonsdale to be restored

Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority has granted Westmorland and Furness Council Listed Building consent to strengthen Rigmaden Bridge.

The bridge was closed in December 2021 following an inspection and structural assessment which identified structural issues, making it unsafe for vehicles and pedestrians.

The council has worked collaboratively with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority to agree a proposed solution that will retain the external appearance of the bridge whilst improving its structural capacity.

The team will now develop a viable construction programme and identify costs associated with delivering the scheme.

The bridge will remain closed until further notice to ensure public safety, however, it remains our intention to restore Rigmaden Bridge.

Cllr Peter Thornton, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Assets said: “Obtaining Listed Building Consent is a positive step toward restoring Rigmaden Bridge, a key part of our highways network that connects communities surrounding Kirkby Lonsdale.

“Working collaboratively with Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority has been integral in achieving this, and we will continue to do so as our team develops a feasible construction plan and funding options to deliver a more resilient bridge.

“Our sincere thanks go out to the local community for their patience and understanding during this prolonged closure.”
