Youngsters in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale are taking advantage of a new outdoor children’s gym.
An ageing zipwire at the Reeth play area has been replaced with four pieces of gym equipment which are designed for primary school aged children. An arm and pedal cycle, a rower, a double slalom skier and a double strength challenger now sit side by side with traditional swings and slides.
It is hoped the equipment will help youngsters develop balance, improve co-ordination and build agility and strength.
The £5,224 scheme received a £3,047 grant from Richmondshire District Council’s Community Investment Fund. It was topped up with cash from the parish council, and North Yorkshire County Councillor Yvonne Peacock’s Locality Fund.
The play park equipment was replaced with exercise equipment after the parish council asked children what they wanted. It is hoped that the new equipment will allow the children to enjoy physical exercise in a fun way and encourage them to develop active lifestyles.
The play park is the only one in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale and is used regularly by local children as well as by visitors.
