Plans have been lodged with North Yorkshire Council to demolish H’s Plaice fish and chip shop in Hellifield to build three new homes.
According to planning documents, the building on Main Street is in poor condition and is commercially unviable for the owner to refurbish.
They added that the business has become “unsustainable” due to high running costs and opening hours have been reduced in recent months.
The proposal seeks to tear down the existing fish and chip shop and replace it with three-storey “townhouse style” properties with three bedrooms each.
They would be attached to the village’s former Co-Op building on the northern side.
An existing access for vehicles from Main Street will be retained along with car parking.
Each house would have a gas boiler to generate heating and hot water for the building with heat distributed throughout the house using an underfloor heating system.
Solar panels are also proposed along with an electric vehicle charging point.
In 2009, the applicant had a bid approved to demolish the fish and chip shop but the plans never came to fruition.
Planning documents said the three homes would provide “modern efficient accommodation” in Hellifield and contribute to the local housing stock.
They added: “The development will have no impact on neighbours or highway safety and will provide a visually improved development in this part of the village. The site is in walking distance of all amenities and close to public transport links.”
North Yorkshire Council will make a decision on the application at a later date.
