Leyburn roadworks start next week

Major improvements to the roads in the centre of the town will start next week with the aim of making them safer for motorists and pedestrians.

A new mini-roundabout is to be installed at the A684/Brentwood junction which will deliver safer access to Brentwood Estate.

The mini-roundabout outside the Bolton Arms Hotel will be repositioned, as well as the pedestrian islands, and the give way lines on the approach lanes set further back to allow large vehicles to turn safely.

The A684 through Leyburn will then undergo overnight resurfacing soon after these works are completed. Dates and times are yet to be confirmed. 

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, said: “We are pleased to be delivering another safety improvement project made possible by the Government’s Safer Roads Fund, which seeks to address issues on the 50 A-roads identified as being the most dangerous in the country.

“Over the summer a series of junction improvements were carried out just a few miles away on the A684 at Patrick Brompton, again delivered through the Safer Roads Fund, which has improved safety on this busy A road.

“It is another great example of how we are delivering on our commitment to improving the infrastructure of important link roads through our towns, making them as safe as they can be for all road users.”

The scheme will begin on Monday (September 27) and is expected to last for up to five weeks. The majority of works will be carried out between 7.30am and 5.30pm under temporary traffic lights on the A684.

Councillor Karin Sedgwick, member for the Middle Dales division, said: “These essential safety improvements in Leyburn will be welcome for everybody who travels through the town centre. The current positioning of the mini-roundabout where the A684 meets the A6108 has long been a problem for large vehicles turning.

“We appreciate the duration of the works will cause a level of disruption so we ask the public for their patience and cooperation.”
