Hawes one way system NOT being removed as part of traffic safety improvements

Suggestions made during a consultation on proposals to improve traffic safety in Hawes town centre and Market Place are being considered.

North Yorkshire County Council consulted on plans for a series of works to be financed by the Government’s Safer Roads Fund, which seeks to address issues on the 50 A roads identified by the Government as having the highest-risk of serious collisions in the country.

Hawes was among the locations identified in the consultation to improve safety along the key A684 from Leeming Bar to junction 37 of the M6. Over 200 responses were received and have now been analysed.

Among the responses received were requests to assess the condition of the existing road surface and the introduction of a pedestrian crossing along Main Street, in addition to a new footway and the review of parking arrangements.  If the proposals meet the national guidelines and specifications, then they will be taken forward, which will require further local consultation.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, said: “I would like to thank everybody who shared their views on the proposals which covered a number of options including improvements to footways, crossing facilities and associated carriageway works.  Our officers have been reviewing your feedback and we are hopeful that the proposals that were supported can secure funding and come to fruition soon.  We would like to reassure the local community that the proposals that were not supported will not be progressed further.”

Councillor Yvonne Peacock, Member for the Upper Dales division, said: “NYCC has listened to all who took part in the consultation and as promised the proposals that were not supported have been removed from the plans for example no traffic lights and no two-way traffic in the Holme.”
