Children’s Charity Joins Forces with Morrisons to Tackle Food Poverty

Yorkshire Dales Children’s Charity The Principle Trust has joined forces with supermarket chain Morrisons in a new initiative designed to reduce food poverty for some of the region’s most disadvantaged families.

‘Food For Families’ will feed families taking a respite holiday provided by the charity; the Trust offers short breaks to children who are underprivileged, disadvantaged, disabled, have life-limiting conditions, or who have experienced poverty, trauma or abuse.

The initiative, which Morrisons is supporting by providing a discount and free delivery, has been introduced in response to cost of living crisis; many of the families referred to the charity experience ongoing food poverty and rely on food banks.

Over the next six months, The Trust will provide hampers for around 100 families staying at Marton Mere Holiday Park near Blackpool where four of the charity’s respite holiday homes are based. The hampers include enough food and everyday essentials to feed a family for a whole week.

The scheme was developed in partnership with Morrisons Head Office and has the backing of staff at their Blackpool store who have also donated toys and Easter eggs.

Announcing the initiative, Founder of The Principle Trust Mike Davies, MBE, commented, ‘Food For Families removes the financial obstacle of food poverty for families for whom a family holiday might not otherwise be possible. The initiative demonstrates our ongoing commitment to Yorkshire’s neediest families and we are indebted to Morrisons for their support.’

General Manager of Morrisons Blackpool store Al Barlow said, "The Principle Trust enables disadvantaged, disabled and poorly children to escape their everyday troubles and create valuable, happy memories. As a supermarket committed to helping good causes in our local community, we are delighted to support the Food For Families initiative.’

If successful, the scheme could be extended to the Trust’s other respite lodges which are based in the Lake District.
