Calendar Girls The Musical world amateur premiere

Tickets have just gone on sale for this world first! After success in the West End and UK tour the musical is to be performed by an amateur company for the first time right here in the Yorkshire Dales.

Grassington Players have been given the opportunity to perform this now world famous musical with a professional director, musical director and full house band.

Tickets have just gone on sale and, as expected, demand has already been high, says David Newall Chairman of the Grassington players: "As soon as tickets went on sale, we immediately sold back as far as row J for the opening night.  In a change to our usual ticket sales, you can now choose where you want to sit when you book."

John told Dales Radio he also has a part in the production, cast as John Baker, husband of Calendar Girl Angela Baker: "John sadly passed away for blood cancer and whilst sufering with cancer it was his idea to encourage the girls to do the calendar".

We are told John also sold sunflowers grown in his garden to help raise more for the charity.  And so the legend of the Calendar Girls was born.

The calendar, the film, the musical and now the amateur premiere of Calendar Girls the Musical will be performed locally by the Grassington Players at the Devonshire Institute in Grassington, bringing the story full circle and home to the Dales.

Based on the true story, the musical will now include the children of some of the girls.  David says this has led to an opening: "We have an opportunity for one young man to get involed and play the part of 17 year old Tomo.  They'll need to be able to act and a good voice would be an advantage.  There will be lots of important people from the world of music at the opening night so maybe a chance to get spotted!".  Send your details via the contact page of the Grassington Players website.

The production runs from 25th September (Gala Night) to 2nd October.  Tickets are on sale now at grassingtonplayers.com £20 for the Gala night and £15 for the rest of the week long run of the production.  A proportion of the profits will go to Blood cancer charities.

You can hear the interview with David Newall on our website as a podcast.
