A PRESSING ENGAGEMENT AT GALLERY ON THE GREEN

This event runs from 5th April to 13th June 2025

Gallery on the Green in upper Settle has now re-opened after a winter break with an exhibition of pressed grasses and flowers by local artist Shelley Woolley.

The gallery, which occupies a converted former BT telephone box, achieved national publicity when it first opened in 2009 as probably the world’s smallest art gallery. Exhibitions over the past 16 years have featured works by national known artists, such as photographer Martin Parr, local school children and most famously Queen guitarist Brian May, who showed a collection of Victorian 3D photographs in the autumn of 2010, soon after the gallery opened.

The new exhibition, titled A Pressing Engagement, runs until June 13. Shelley Woolley, who lives close to the gallery, uses pressed grasses and flowers to create a range of striking works. She says: “I have always ‘dabbled’ in arts and crafts, whether it be painting, drawing, clay-work or sewing. I am also a keen and experienced gardener. A couple of years ago, at my request, my nephew made me a super-sized flower press, which enabled me to start pressing grasses and larger wild flowers. I have an allotment at Dog Meadow in Settle and have obtained a variety of ‘pressing’ material from some of the more unkempt areas around the allotments.

“I started by painting simple backgrounds in watercolour or acrylics and then sticking on the pressed grasses etc, with craft glue, in a naturalistic way. I then discovered that it was possible to paint the grasses and use them to print with and also paint the grasses to alter their appearance. This produced some interesting effects.”

“I am proud to be able to have an exhibition in the iconic Telephone Box Gallery on the Green in Settle. I hope that people enjoy it and maybe get some inspiration from it.”
